Ben Kissel
Benjamin Grant Kissel was born in Fargo, North Dakota on July 21, 1981, and raised in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Ben is the son of Bengt Kissel, a German immigrant, and Laura Kissel, who nurtured him in a deeply religious environment. Ben's Midwestern charm and quick wit have captured the attention of audiences worldwide.
Ben Kissel is a versatile individual renowned for his contributions to comedy, podcasting, and political activism. Standing tall with a commanding presence, he is easily recognizable, but it is his infectious laughter and ability to find humor in even the most serious topics that set him apart.
In addition to his work on The Last Podcast on the Left, Ben has lent his voice and expertise to a variety of projects, including political podcasts and television appearances, demonstrating his multifaceted nature as both a commentator and entertainer. He is also a co-creator of Roundtable of Gentlemen and Abe Lincoln's Top Hat, where he engaged in discussions about current events and politics with a variety of guests.
Ben was the youngest of three boys and grew up in a controversial church called Daystar before the family relocated to Stevens Point, Wisconsin. His parents were actively involved in the church and the Pro-Life movement, and family dynamics were further complicated by the fact that his two older brothers were gay. Additionally, the family frequently took in foster children.
Even though Ben was homeschooled, which was considered unusual back then, he likes to say he's a pro at navigating supermarkets because he used to go to Piggly Wiggly every day with his mom. After skipping 5th grade, Ben started attending Catholic school in 6th grade at St. Peters Middle School in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. It was there that he made some lifelong friends who he still keeps in touch with today. Along with the usual growing pains, Ben also struggled with severe ADHD and depression during this time.
After completing high school, Ben attended UW-Stout, where he discovered his passion for stand-up comedy at the age of nineteen. He later transferred to UW-Milwaukee, where he earned a degree in Political Science.
In 2006, Kissel made the momentous decision to move to Brooklyn, New York to further pursue his career in comedy. A decision that would change is life forever. After moving to Brooklyn, New York in 2006, he partnered with 3Arts and CAA to develop news-based comedic shows. Despite facing initial setbacks in stand-up comedy, Ben Kissel persisted and eventually revolutionized the entertainment industry by launching some of the earliest and most beloved podcasts in history, The Last Podcast on the Left, The Roundtable of Gentleman and Abe Lincoln’s Top Hat.
Ben also worked with the late Kevin Barnett on a show called KBBK Comedy Deathmatch, featuring some of the most prominent figures in comedy at the time. It was during this partnership that Ben embarked on his first successful podcast venture. Together, Ben and Kevin launched The Roundtable of Gentlemen, a weekly podcast delving into current events with insightful analysis and engaging discussions. Following the success of his previous show, Ben decided to leverage his expertise in politics by creating a new program called Abe Lincoln's Top Hat.
In 2017, Ben Kissel ran for Brooklyn Borough President against current NYC Mayor Eric Adams, receiving 1.8% of the vote. This experience deepened his understanding of politics and further shaped his political beliefs. Ben is a passionate advocate for comprehensive criminal justice reforms. He played a pivotal role in addressing transportation issues in Brooklyn, particularly concerning the L Train. Ben remains dedicated to advocating for marginalized groups and individuals in need. He continues to champion positive change in his community.
In addition to being a popular podcaster, he is also a successful author. Ben has collaborated on the New York Times best-selling book, “The Last Book on the Left. Stories of Murder and Mayhem from History's Most Notorious Serial Killers.” The book delves into the chilling histories of some of the most notorious serial killers in history, including Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy. They meticulously explore the origins, disturbing behaviors, and twisted desires of these individuals. The updated edition includes new content as well as beloved fan favorites, providing a comprehensive look into the darkest aspects of human nature.
Further expanding his literary repertoire, Ben co-created the comic book series, "DC Horror Presents: Soul Plumber". This innovative series ventures into the supernatural world's darkest corners. It follows Edrick "Eddie" Harper, who embarks on a career as a soul plumber, tasked with unclogging the spiritual drains of our world. The series stands out with its unique mix of horror, humor, and heart, captivating readers with a narrative that keeps them on the edge of their seats.
Ben's personal life is enriched by his strong connections with friends and family, and his dogs, Puffin and Jerry, bring him joy amid his busy schedule. His commitment to his new show and the Ben Kissel Channel demonstrates his ongoing dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
